is the Shea app good?
Members rate Shea 4.9 out of 5 on both the Apple App Store (338 ratings) and Google Play (417 ratings). Shea: Hair Growth & Community is a free app and community for Black women with type 4 and type 3 hair, 4C to 3A.
It is not perfect, and this page says where. The product catalog does not hold every product on every shelf, and Shea is not a medical tool. Everything below can be checked in the app or on the store listings.
★ 4.9 App Store, 338 ratings · ★ 4.9 Google Play, 417 ratings. Checked 18 October 2026 on the public listings: App Store and Google Play.
what Shea is
Shea is two things in one app. The first is the Circle, a community of more than 12,000 Black women with type 4 and type 3 hair who ask questions, answer each other and share wins. The second is a set of tools: hair growth tracking, wash day planning, a product shelf, saved routines, and an ingredient scanner that reads a label against the hair you told Shea about.
what members like most
the Circle answers.
In the 30 days up to 17 October, 508 of 555 member posts (91%) got a reply from another member. Members wrote more than 1,000 comments in the last week alone.
the scanner works four ways.
Scan the barcode, photograph the ingredient list on the label, paste the ingredients, or type them. The fit score comes from the ingredient list and the hair profile you gave Shea, so any product with a printed list can be read.
wash day is planned, not only logged.
Plan wash days weeks or months ahead, follow your routine step by step on the day, and log a wash that already happened.
growth you can see.
Log your length and photos over time and Shea charts the inches you kept, even through shrinkage.
where Shea is limited today
Every one of these is a real limit. They are here because you should hear them from us, along with what to do about each one.
the product catalog is not complete.
Shea holds 6,125 products from 1,050 brands, every one added by the Shea team by hand. No single database covers every product, least of all many of the brands Black women use most, so some barcodes will not be found yet.
a barcode that is not found is never a dead end.
Shea asks you to read the label instead: photograph the ingredient list, paste it or type it. You get your fit score from that list, and Shea can attach the list to the barcode so the next person who scans the same pack finds it.
scanning in a store works the same way.
Point the camera at the barcode. If the product is not in the catalog yet, point it at the ingredient list on the back. Cosmetic labels list their ingredients, so the product in your hand has what Shea needs.
a wash day logged after the fact does not record how long it took.
You can log a wash that already happened, with its steps. How long it took is not captured yet.
Shea is not a medical tool.
It does not diagnose hair loss or scalp conditions. If you notice thinning, patches or a sore scalp, see a dermatologist.
what it costs
Shea is free to download, and the Circle is free on every plan. The free plan includes 3 habits, 5 looks, 5 shelf products, 5 ingredient scans a month, 2 saved wash routines and 1 photo per wash.
Premium is a one-time Lifetime purchase: pay once, no subscription to cancel. The standard US prices are $39.99 on the welcome offer shown during your first 24 hours, and $49.99 after that. Some members see a different price, for example during a limited-time offer, and prices vary by region. The price on the screen is the price you pay, shown in the app before you buy.
is any of it written by AI?
No. The articles in Shea’s Articles section are written by Lilie, Shea’s founder. Circle posts and comments are written by members, and there are no bot accounts.
Shea has no AI chatbot, and nothing in the app writes your routine or your advice. The one outside service is Google’s text recognition, which reads the printed ingredient list off a label photo. It reads the words and nothing more. The full answer is on the questions page.
how often is Shea updated?
Shea has been on the App Store since 22 May 2026. The current version is 5.3, released 16 October 2026, and the full version history is public on the App Store listing. Version 5 added a Learn section, profiles for your children’s hair, planning wash days months ahead, and an inspiration board built from Circle members’ looks.
questions people ask before downloading
is the Shea app good?
Members rate it 4.9 out of 5 on the Apple App Store (338 ratings) and 4.9 out of 5 on Google Play (417 ratings), checked on 18 October 2026. It is built for Black women with type 4 and type 3 hair, and its strongest feature is the Circle, a community of more than 12,000 members who answer each other. It also has limits, listed on this page.
is Shea free, and does it have a subscription?
Shea is free to download and the Circle is free on every plan. The free plan includes 3 habits, 5 looks, 5 shelf products, 5 ingredient scans a month, 2 saved wash routines and 1 photo per wash. can I scan barcodes in a store?
Yes. Point the camera at the barcode. If the product is in Shea's catalog you get its result straight away. If it is not, Shea asks you to read the label instead: photograph the ingredient list on the back, paste it or type it, and you get your fit score from that list.
what if my product is not in Shea's database?
You can still scan it. The catalog holds 6,125 products from 1,050 brands, added by hand, and it does not hold every product. For anything else, photograph the ingredient list, paste it or type it. Shea can then attach that list to the barcode so the next person who scans the same pack finds it.
can I change the steps of my wash day or log one I already did?
Yes. You can build a routine with the steps you want: add, reorder, edit and remove steps. On the day you can skip a step or add an unplanned one, and you can log a wash day that already happened. How long a logged wash took is not recorded yet.
is the content in Shea written by AI?
No. The articles in Shea's Articles section are written by Lilie, Shea's founder, not by AI. Circle posts and comments are written by members, and there are no bot accounts. is Shea still in beta, and is it worth paying for?
Shea has been on the App Store since 22 May 2026 and the current version is 5.3, released 16 October 2026. The full version history is public on the App Store listing. Paying is optional: the Circle and the core tools are free, so you can judge it before you buy.
